Egu

Questa foto merita di stare al centro della pagina. E’ memorabile. Perchè? Lo spiego subito: Chi ha l’occhio da scienziato avrà già intuito che stavo presentando un poster. Ero all’EGU a Vienna. Il tizio vicino a me, con pantaloni viola, camicia nera, foulard di seta nero con colombe bianche e un giacchetto tipo chiodo (e la capigliatura assicuro che non è una parrucca, ma vero capello anni 70!), sebbene possa dare l’idea di essere un frikkettone trovato all’ultimo momento per le strade della città, è in realtà un grande (rischia seriamente di diventare il mio Guru informatico): si chiama Keith J Jeffery, è un vero cervellone delle architetture informatiche in Europa, con vari titoli (dice un excerpt di una sua [[_FILES/PROJ-SRC/github/danielebailo.github.io/content/bio|bio]]: “Keith Jeffery is currently Director of IT and International Strategy of STFC (Science and Technology Facilities Council), based at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory (RAL) in the UK.”). Ma possiede vari altri titoli (direttore di quà, presidente di là), si è occupato di Grid o ora lavora col Cloud e tante altre belle cosine che tralascio. ...

This photo deserves to be at the center of the page. It is memorable. Why? I will explain immediately: anyone with a scientific eye will already have understood that I was presenting a poster. The guy next to me, wearing purple trousers, a black shirt, a black silk scarf with white doves, and a biker-style jacket, and I assure you that the hair is not a wig but real 1970s hair, may look like a hippie picked up at the last minute from the city streets. In reality, he is a great mind, and is seriously at risk of becoming my IT guru: his name is Keith J. Jeffery. He is a true heavyweight in European IT architectures, with many titles. An excerpt from one of his bios says: “Keith Jeffery is currently Director of IT and International Strategy of STFC (Science and Technology Facilities Council), based at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory (RAL) in the UK.” He also holds various other titles, director here, president there, has worked on Grid, now works on Cloud, and many other interesting things that I will skip. ...

Cosa c’entra Rocco Siffredi con Google e con la tecnologia? Il punto in comune è chiaro: l’ostentazione di enorme potenza, in un caso sessuale, nell’altro computazionale (lascio indovinare al lettore quale sia il caso di Google e quale quello del Siffredi). E’ un parallelo che è apparso in maniera evidente nella mia mente quando ho ascoltato un talk, qui all’EGU, (leggi questo post per scoprire cos’è ‘EGU) del nuovo motore di ricerca/calcolo per le scienze della terra, EarthEngine, targato Google. What does Rocco Siffredi have to do with Google and technology? The common point is clear: the display of enormous power, sexual in one case and computational in the other. I leave it to the reader to guess which one is Google and which one is Siffredi. The parallel appeared very clearly in my mind when I listened to a talk here at EGU (read this post to discover what EGU is) about Google’s new search and computation engine for Earth sciences, EarthEngine. I have various friends and acquaintances outside my work circle with whom I often end up talking about my activities. Every time, surprisingly, I discover how hard it is to explain what happens at these conferences or meetings I sometimes attend. Having already given up on answering the fatal question “what do you do for a living?” when asked by non-specialists over 70, I now try to explain how a congress such as EGU works. I once tried saying: “I work in EPOS, a European project dealing with the integration of research infrastructures for Earth sciences; now I work on metadata collection for the creation of a catalogue that will allow data discovery and integration.” The result was bewildered looks, mechanical “ah, interesting” replies, and other scenes I will spare you. ...

Ho vari amici e conoscenti al di fuori della cerchia del lavoro con cui spesso mi ritrovo a parlare delle mie attività. Ogni volta - sorprendentemente - scopro quanto sia poco semplice raccontare quello che si fa a questi congressi o meeting a cui ogni tanto partecipo. Avendo già gettato la spugna sul tentativo di rispondere alla fatidica domanda “che lavoro fai?” posta dai non addetti ai lavori di età superiore a 70 anni ("…lavoro in EPOS, un progetto Europeo che si occupa delle integrazione delle infrastrutture di ricerca per le scienze della terra, ora mi occupo della raccolta dei metadati per la creazione del catalogo che permettarà la discovery e l’integrazione dei dati" ho provato a dire, e seguivano sguardi basiti, degli “ah però, interessante” detti con evidente meccanicità e altre scene che vi risparmio), tento allora di illustrare come funziona un congresso come l’EGU. ...
