EPOS – European Plate Observing system

We are looking for three IT technician profiles to contribute to the development of an innovative European research infrastructure aimed at integrating data and services in the domain of solid Earth sciences. Integration takes place through an advanced system, the Integrated Core Services (ICS), which allows users to search, download, and analyze data from scientific communities through a single map-based web platform and interface using geolocated data.

The call is funded by the EPOS-MIUR project. The contract duration is one year, with the possibility of renewal. The position will be classified under the professional profile of Collaboratore Tecnico Enti di Ricerca (level VI). The public call was published in the Italian Official Gazette no. 79 of 04.10.2019. Who we are

The Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia (INGV) is a public research institution. INGV’s primary objective is to contribute to understanding the dynamics of the Earth system, in its different phenomena and solid and fluid components, and to mitigating associated natural risks. The institute has launched numerous projects, including the European Plate Observing System (EPOS), which has now become an ERIC. EPOS (www.epos-eu.org) is an innovative European research infrastructure whose purpose is to integrate data and services in the domain of solid Earth sciences. These include data and services related to earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, geodetic deformation, satellite observations, and more. They are highly heterogeneous in terms of data-provision technologies, formats, and ways of presenting resources. The activities will take place within this project.

Who are you?

You are a software developer with Java skills, good knowledge of relational databases, and/or a junior system administrator interested in cloud computing, the creation of geolocated systems, and more generally the exploration of new technologies applied creatively to problem solving. You are not afraid to engage with the team to help it achieve its objectives.

Required professional qualifications

The requirements are described in the call and are summarized here. a) high-school diploma; b) experience in the following areas: software development in Java or other object-oriented languages (C++, Python); design and management of relational databases; experience using Linux/Unix systems; ability to participate in collaborative contexts and teamwork; c) general knowledge of: main imperative programming languages, for example PHP and JavaScript; basic knowledge of non-relational databases, for example MongoDB; d) knowledge of English.

Work location and salary

The work location is Rome. The working schedule is 36 hours per week, with flexible hours. The annual gross salary for CTER level VI positions is governed by the current national contract and is approximately 31,000 euros gross per year.
